Election Remark
John W. Hutchinson (born April 10, 1939) is the Abbott and James Lawrence Research Professor of Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University.

He works in the field of solid mechanics concerned with a broad range of problems in structures and engineering materials.

Hutchinson was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1983 for the fundamental contributions to the understanding of the elastic and plastic buckling of structures and the mechanical behavior and fracture of engineering materials.

In 1992, he was elected as member of the European Academy of Engineering.

His scientific interests lie mostly in Composite material, Fracture mechanics, Stress intensity factor, Mechanics and Crack closure. In his study, Elastomer is strongly linked to Thin film, which falls under the umbrella field of Composite material.

His work deals with themes such as Fiber pull-out, Fracture, Brittleness, Adhesive and Forensic engineering, which intersect with Fracture mechanics.
