Oliver Smithies was a British-born American geneticist and Nobel laureate credited with inventing gel electrophoresis in 1955, dramatically improving the technique and paving the way for numerous genetic advances. His later work involved the modification of genes in mice using embryonic stem cells which has widespread use in genetics and biotechnology.

He was elected as member of the European Academy of Engineering in 2004.
