James P. Allison is an American immunologist and Nobel Laureate recognized for his pioneering work that led to the development of immune checkpoint therapy, a novel way to treat cancer.

Allison's research specifically on the CTLA-4 pathway demonstrated the potential of releasing an "immune system brake" to allow immune cells to attack tumors, revolutionizing cancer treatment.

He currently holds the position of professor and chair of Immunology and executive director of the Immunotherapy Platform at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

He was elected as member of the European Academy of Engineering in 2009.
