Thomas John Mueller is an acclaimed American aerospace engineer and rocket engine designer, recognized for his pioneering contributions to spacecraft propulsion. As SpaceX's first employee, Mueller's expertise was instrumental in developing the Merlin, Draco, Super Draco, and TR-106 rocket engines, underscoring his role as one of the foremost experts in rocket propulsion technology. His designs have propelled numerous SpaceX missions, contributing significantly to the commercial space industry's growth.

Prior to joining SpaceX, Mueller spent 15 years at TRW Inc., where he managed the propulsion and combustion products department. His tenure there was marked by the development of the TR-106 hydrogen engine and various innovations that bolstered his reputation in the field. His passion for rocketry extended beyond professional confines, leading him to construct and test his own engines, a pursuit that eventually caught the attention of Elon Musk.

In 2021, Mueller ventured into entrepreneurship, founding Impulse Space, where he currently serves as CEO. The company focuses on developing chemical rocket engines, space tugs, and planetary landers, with ambitions to facilitate payload deliveries to Mars.

Mueller's journey began in St. Maries, Idaho, where he grew up in a logging family but was drawn to engineering. He funded his education at the University of Idaho through logging, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, followed by a master's degree from Loyola Marymount University. His work has earned him several U.S. patents and recognition from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2024, he was elected as member of EAE under class of Computer Science and Information Technology (C.S.E.).
