A pioneer in compiler organization and optimization techniques, Frances E. Allen was the first woman to win the Turing Award for her work at IBM that significantly improved the efficiency and capabilities of compilers, the programs that translate high-level code into machine language.

In 1993, she was elected as member of the European Academy of Engineering.
