Election Remark
Professor Peter Carmeliet, MD 1984, PhD 1989 (KU Leuven) is head of the Laboratory of Angiogenesis and Vascular Metabolism and former director of the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology. In 2022 he received an appointment at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi(UAE).

The focus of the Carmeliet Lab, isto unravel the molecular and cellular basis of the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) in health and disease, and in particular the role ofvascular metabolism and vascular heterogeneityherein, with the ultimate goal to identify novel therapeutic pro-or anti-angiogenic strategies. His group’s recent generation of a comprehensive single cell transcriptome of tumor endothelial cells promises to yield further insights into novel anti-and pro-angiogenic targets in the endothelial metabolome.

Peter won various International and National awards, including the Francqui Prizein Biological and Medical Sciences (2002),theErnst Jung Prizein Medicine (2010),the Heineken Prize for Medicine (2018) and Elected Member of the Intl. Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences(2021). In 2015, King Filip of Belgium granted him the Noble title of ‘Baron’.In 2021 he was elected as an International Honorary Member of the prestigious American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAAS). In 2024 he was elected as member of the European Academyof Engineering to the Class of Biomedical Engineering.
